Fiberglass Columns versus Synthetic ColumnsWe consider the capital to be the crowning jewel to every column, for this reason we feel it has to be of the highest quality. Our master sculptor makes each decorative capital for our columns from clay. They are a one of a kind, and our company prides itself in the fine lines and details that our capitals possess. Fiberglass: Tuscan caps and bases that are provided with these columns are normally made of plastic, they have to be painted, and if these caps or bases are hit or struck by an object during the cold of winter they can crack.
Fiberglass: The ornate capitals that are provided with most fiberglass columns are made out of polyurethane foam. With this product it is very difficult to get real fine lines and details. If water is able to get to these capitals they will deteriorate very quickly. You may view a six year old ornate fiberglass column affected by water on our website now, under gallery before & after.
Fiberglass: This is a product that will hold up to the weather very well, one disadvantage though, is they have to be painted every few years, which leaves a paint sheen. This is the first indicator that they are not real stone columns.
Fiberglass: When fiberglass columns are produced, they are made in a mold that transfers the two joints onto the column. Very heavy grit sandpaper is used to remove these joints leaving deep sand marks on the column. You cannot hide these marks simply by painting. It takes a painter about thirty minutes to remove these marks from a twelve inch by ten foot column.
Fiberglass: Most fiberglass columns are made approximately 3/16 of an inch thick, when you tap on these columns they seem to be very thin and hollow, but for this reason they are cheaper in cost to produce.
